Adolescents in Humanitarian Contexts

This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the sexual and reproductive health needs and risks of girls and boys aged 10 to 14 in humanitarian contexts across Ethiopia, Lebanon, and Thailand. It highlights the heightened risks faced by very young adolescents, including early marriage, forced sex, limited access to schooling, and inadequate age-sensitive sexual and reproductive health services. Using a research-to-action approach, the consortium engaged adolescents in mapping safe and unsafe spaces, identifying sources of health information, and voicing their specific challenges. The findings reveal distinct vulnerabilities for girls and boys, with girls more often fearing rape, early marriage, and pregnancy, and boys reporting concerns about group violence, substance abuse, and insecurity. The report also identifies a critical gap in menstrual hygiene, noting stark disparities in access across settings, and underscores the need for early, context-specific interventions that involve parents, teachers, and community stakeholders to support protective factors and reduce risks.
